About

The Challenge Family is the fastest growing global long distance triathlon series, now with 44 full and half distance triathlons in 21 countries and we are changing the face of long distance racing around the world. Featuring spectacular courses in iconic destinations, Challenge Family events focus on delivering the race of a lifetime to athletes of all ages and abilities, and creating a memorable spectator experience that captures all the excitement and emotion of this inspirational sport.

Award-winning

While we may look like other series on paper we offer a real difference in execution, engagement and relationships that is recognized by our athletes, sponsors and partners as this selection of recent accolades suggests: Challenge Roth voted the Race of the Year for 2011 and 2012 by readers of Europe’s largest triathlon magazine (ahead of Ironman Hawaii & 2012 Olympics Triathlon) Challenge Barcelona was voted as Spain’s #1 Triathlon in 2010 and 2011 Challenge Copenhagen was nominated for the prestigious International Sports Event Management Award in its first year and won Copenhagen’s Sports Event of the Year in 2012.

Commitment to Legacy

While Challenge Family may be the (relatively) new kid on the block, our commitment to the legacy of our sport is unrivaled. Roth is the home of triathlon in Europe since 1986 and the world’s largest long distance race. Each year over 5,000 triathletes and 210,000 spectators make the pilgrimage to Challenge Roth to what, in the words of Chrissie Wellington, is “simply the best race in the world!” Challenge Family was born in Roth but it now includes many of the world’s great races. These include the oldest race in mainland North America, Challenge Penticton, the oldest race in Europe, Challenge Almere, the oldest race in Asia, Challenge Laguna Phuket and the oldest race in Australia, Challenge Forster. This commitment to the legacy of our sport is echoed through all the newer Challenge races, all chosen for their spectacular locations, unique courses and vibrant communities.

Family

Anyone with marketing spin and hollow words can call themselves a family, not every organisation can be a family in the true sense of the word and this is what sets Challenge Family apart. When we say “We Are Triathlon!” we include everyone who makes up the Challenge Family – athletes, volunteers, sponsors, supporters, spectators. We work hard to ensure that everyone is treated as a valued individual, whether a first timer or a world champion, and everyone inbetween! And Challenge Family really is a family, it is run by the Walchshöfer Family, Alice, Felix and Kathrin who are continuing the legacy started by their husband and father, the late Herbert Walchshöfer. Since the first triathlon in Roth in 1984, the Walchshöfers have been involved in the sport. In 2001 the decision was made to breakaway from the Ironman stable. In 2002, Herbert and his team delivered the first Challenge race and so the legend of Roth grew to become the world’s largest long distance race. In 2007, the first Challenge race took place outside of Europe in Lake Wanaka, New Zealand. In 2009, races in France, Spain and Germany joined the Family and now over 60,000 athletes race with Challenge Family in 40 races on four continents.

As Challenge Family has grown, so has the team, with Zibi Szlufcik now Challenge Family CEO, supported by an amazing team of individuals around the globe who are passionate about the sport of triathlon and bringing the Challenge experience to the world. For full details, click here
